Cancer BenefitsA CANCER RESEARCH BENEFIT Huron Valley Regional Council #34 has been hosting a "Celebration of Life" event since 1999. What started
as a "gleam" in one member´s eye has turned into HVRC´s most successful community service project.
When HVRC was developing the concept of an on-going community service project, many individuals wanted to call it a "Cancer" benefit and although proceeds do go to cancer research at the University of Michigan, it became a celebration when a very important member of our local organization was celebrating being cancer free for five years (this is now her 14th year cancer free). Cancer has such a negative connotation that HVRC was determined to put a positive spin on the project--thus, "Celebration of Life". This year is HVRC´s "10th Annual" celebration. With each year, we have had the privilege of presenting the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center a substantial check to be used at the University strictly for cancer research. We are proud to say that with each passing year, we have increased our donations to the University. To date we have raised over $50,000 for the University. The Celebration has become not only a Parents Without Partners fund raising event, but a "community" event as well. This is accomplished through donations from local businesses and citizens as well as PWP members. Parents Without Partners is only the catalyst, we are successful through donations of generous community supporters. Over the years, the faces involved in this Celebration of Life have changed, but the goal of the event has not. It would be the most incredible accomplishment in the world if the money raised at our Celebration were the last money needed to find a cure! Each year we have this hope. Hope is what gets us all through that horrible disease. In 2006 we added a Golf Outing in addition to our Celebration of Life Ball. Again, in 2008, we will be holding both the Outing (in August) and the Ball (in November). We invite everyone to participate in our events and help us CELEBRATE LIFE! |
